GREENHEART RIG CONVERSION PROPOSAL
Present Conditions
In the aftermath of the Tohoku tsunami of 3/11/11, much (up to 90% in some areas ) of the fishing fleet of small and mid-sized boats has been lost, damaged, and washed inland. The commercial waterfront has been congested with debris, and machinery destroyed or damaged. The wharf side support infrastructure of warehouses, refrigeration facilities and transportation links for the fishing industry has been disabled. There is an urgent need to repair vessels, replace infrastructure and restore docks, waterways and seafood farming beds to operable conditions.
One aspect of the Greenheart (Gh) 32 meter design is the innovative A-frame rig that serves both as a crane and as a mast for sails. This Gh rig allows stable, heavy-lift capability over the bow of the vessel, folds down flat to permit vessels passage under low bridges, and stows along the rails and bows of a vessel to permit use of the entire deck, hatches and machinery at all times. Installation of the Gh rig will not require major modifications or structural alterations of a small vessel.
Proposal
Greenheart proposes the use of its rig technology for the conversion of a 12-meter fishing boat from the affected area.
A Gh rig would be re-engineered for, and fitted on the trial vessel for the specific tasks of clean-up, removals, and installations in the tsunami recovery zone. Greenheart would provide technical support and supervision for the construction, testing and whatever modifications might be necessary for the prototype rig. Greenheart would also provide follow-up support during operations, and re-engineering for subsequent trials on other vessels.
We believe that the temporary conversion of idled fishing boats into small workboats will provide employment for the crippled fishing industry in the region, and speed the recovery of the affected marine zones by allowing many local boat owners to participate in the clean-up and rebuilding efforts.
Gh rigs could remain installed on the local fleet to give it increased capabilities and provide emergency sail propulsion and fuel savings in the future.
